We have gotten this question asked so many times, we thought we’d throw in a bonus Ask a PT question this month to answer this so very common question. About 80 to 85% of the population has flat feet in standing that can contribute to excessive or prolonged pronation (walking on the inside of your feet) during gait. This doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone needs orthotics. However, if you have pain or discomfort with walking, or if your feet are so flat they have prohibited you from enjoying activities on your feet, you may definitely find that orthotics customized to your feet and gait pattern completely change your world! As we age or for people who are diabetic, we also may get foot pain from a reduction in the normal cushioning tissues at the bottom of our feet or from the diabetes itself, making a cushioned orthotic a very good option for others.
Walking, running, hiking, and just plain old standing should NOT hurt your feet. MotionWorks carries custom orthotics (covered by some insurance plans with a physician’s order or prescription) as well as off the shelf customizable orthotics that have worked extremely well. These orthotics by Vasyli are very well made and last for years, and our physical therapists meet with you one on one to determine first whether or not you need them, and then second, what exactly you need to customize them for your feet and walking pattern. With a price point at $50 plus tax, you can use your HSA or Flex spend dollars to make your feet happy without having to see your MD first.
Not sure where to start? If you have an injury, start with a complementary injury screening to see how to address your pain. If you just think you could use some orthotics, call us to schedule a complementary orthotic fitting, and our physical therapists will advise you from there. Call 920-215-2050 to schedule, and remember we do have convenient before and after work times available.
